Maya's House

I can still hear the noise of Mr Shadow and Maya

arguing and fighting in my head...

- It's my house! My father built this house!

Maya used to scream at Mr. Shadow during their

arguements. Mr Shadow was a shadow in Maya's

house which was always full of conflicts. Now  Maya's

house is falling down in a harsh suburb, surrounded

by ghost gum trees and lantana. It's been locked

away for years, deserted and forgotten. Hidden it

stands in isolation, listening to the rustle of the leaves

and the confused gossip of the magpies...

And I can hear Maya yelling at me...

- I was going to leave him, I was going to pack my bags

and take your sister and leave him, but then you came

along...And I still will, I'll still pack my bags and go if

you don't behave yourself!

Now inside Maya's house her living room is filled

with shadows. Maya's living room hasn't been this

crowded since Maya died, and everyone who went

to her funeral came back for a drink, or a bite to eat,

or to shed a few tears, except for Mr. Shadow that is, he

just got drunk and abusive, and kept complaining that

Maya never loved him, though he did his best by her,

that at the end just before she died, all she did was to

keep calling out to him...

- You're a silly man, a silly man!

The shadows yell and fight, and now Mr Shadow is

pressing closer to me, too close. So close I've become

part of his shadow. And in the summer there was the

constant noise of cicadas...
